I’ve been taking tennis lessons for almost 9 months now. I used to play tennis when I was about 10-13 or 14 years old, and I started playing again after such a long absence. I thought I forgot how to play tennis but you still remember what you learned when you were little. I could play it alright, if not well.

The other day, however, I was shocked to find that how I play – my form – is so early 80’s. From grip to take back and swing, the new trend of forms are completely different. What I believed right is almost wrong now. To play like Serena Williams (Why Serena? Because I am chubby!), I have to learn tennis all over from the beginning again.

It’s important to keep up with new technology. That’s true of tennis, as well as web design and other jobs.

Never eat fried rice which has been sitting overnight at a room temperature.

Last weekend was 3-day holidays but I was so sick in bed from food poisoning. On Saturday night, I had dinner at a Chinese restaurant. It wasn’t a cheap diner but was a clean and neat place with a relaxed atmosphere. The food was good and they served so much that I brought home some fried rice in a doggy bag. After I got back home, I left it on the table then went to bed.

The next day, I heated it up with the microwave and ate it for an early lunch or brunch.

About an about later, I felt an acute nausea, the worst I’d ever had. Since then I had been stuck in the bathroom for a couple of hours. I had been battling against the symptom with groaning until I could finally see the doctor even on Sunday.

Even after I recovered, I couldn’t understand why I got so ill by eating only 1 day-old fried rice. It wasn’t even 1 day old, but about a half day old. So I searched to find what was wrong with it.

Fried Rice Syndrome

That’s the shocking phrase I found on the web. As explained in Wikipedia,

It* is the cause of “Fried Rice Syndrome,” as the bacteria is classically contracted from fried rice dishes that have been sitting at room temperature for hours (such as at a buffet).
*It = Bacillus cereus

I was very convinced as I had exactly the same symptoms.

When you see left over rice or fried rice, remember the phrase. Be careful of a buffet too. If you don’t want to waste your food, make sure you put it in the fridge.

Like I wrote last year, my family and I left Tokyo this April and moved to Tsu city, Mie prefecture. It’s where I was born and raised. I had lived there until I was 18. It’s a small city which is located between Nagoya and Osaka.

Thanks to the net and social media, I don’t feel isolated from friends in Tokyo. Old friends welcome me warmly. So far the life here is comfortable.

I haven’t started my local business here yet, but just working with clients in Tokyo. What I want to do now is to work both locally and globally – working with people here in Mie to help their businesses grow and to promote my hometown, as well as working with people from all over the world, without caring about the location. Although I believe location is not a problem nowadays at least for what I do, lots of people in Japan seem to still think it is. Japan is such a small country and I hope more people will make better use of technology and work remotely to live slower lives.
